Sífilis congênita: educação para gestantes

Abstract

Congenital syphilis is transmitted from an infected or inadequately treated mother to her fetus. When diagnosed and properly treated, pregnant women can drastically reduce the possibility of transmitting the disease to their babies. General objective: To develop an educational booklet for pregnant women with guidelines on congenital syphilis. Method: Field research, using a mixed methodological approach to develop an educational booklet based on the demands presented by pregnant women through interviews. The setting was a maternity hospital in Rio de Janeiro, and the population consisted of pregnant women receiving prenatal care. Data analysis and processing were based on patient statements, which generated the focal points to be included in the booklet. All requirements of Resolution 466/2012 of the National Health Council (CNS/MS), which deals with ethics in research involving human subjects, were taken into account. Results and Discussion: The majority of the interviewees (60%) were black/brown, 70% were over 30 years old, and numerous questions arose regarding knowledge about congenital syphilis, forms of transmission of the disease, and its treatment. Given this, based on data extracted from a theoretical reference from the Ministry of Health, an educational booklet was created with eight thematic sessions, divided into six pages. Conclusion: It is important that pregnant women have knowledge about the disease, its forms of transmission, and symptoms so that they can be heard, welcomed, and respected, ceasing to be patients and becoming protagonists of their own care.
