A música antiga no pensamento do jovem Nietzsche

Abstract

The period of Nietzsche’s intellectual production from 1869 to the publication of The Birth of Tragedy in 1872 is marked by a profound immersion in the themes of ancient Greek poetry and music. The reconstruction of his contributions to this field still remains an object that lacks broader systematization within academic scholarship, and any attempt to evaluate structurally the results of his youthful research encounters well-known challenges, ranging from the need to deal with fragmentary texts, constant changes and internal theoretical contradictions, to the necessity of contextualizing his disputes with the classical philology of the time, and extending to the influences of Wagner’s modern music and Schopenhauer’s theories. Far from attempting to account for all these aspects, this dissertation aims merely to present a general, delimited framework of the problem surrounding the young Nietzsche and mousiké. Accordingly, this effort is divided into three moments: in the first chapter, the issue is introduced through key terms for its understanding, delving into Nietzsche’s consonances and divergences with the philological tradition; in the second chapter, “Apollonian music” is addressed; and finally, in the third, “Dionysian music” is discussed in detail.
