Indicadores ambientais como ferramenta de avaliação da gestão sustentável: o caso da Reserva Ecológica de Guapiaçu (REGUA) - RJ

Abstract

The Guapiaçu Ecological Reserve, known as REGUA, is located in the municipality of Cachoeiras de Macacu and is dedicated to the conservation of the remaining Atlantic Forest in the Guapiaçu watershed. The third sector is different from businesses and the government due to the unique nature of its activities and often encounters challenges related to the lack of well-established management mechanisms. In this context, the use of sustainability indicators enables the creation of a multidisciplinary perspective capable of evaluating outcomes and positioning the organisation in terms of its sustainability. The use of sustainability indicators facilitates the development of an integrated perspective by adressing established sustainability goals, providing decision makers with adequate conditions for monitoring and supporting the management process. Therefore, the aim of this study was to propose a set of sustainable development indicators capable of analysing and measuring the sustainability of REGUA. Consequently, the following research question was posed: Are sustainability indicators capable of indicating the sustainability of REGUA? The methodology employed was the M.A.I.S method, which seeks ways to visualise the organisation's position in relation to sustainability through the scoring of indicators grouped by environmental, economic, and social dimensions, in order to enhance the search for improvement opportunities. The results demonstrated that the adopted method was effective, easy to apply and understand, showing that REGUA qualifies as a sustainable organisation with relatively uniform values across its dimensions. However, the Economic Dimension scored the highest, followed by the Environmental and Social Dimensions.
