Resumo

This study aims to analyze the content of the information on consumption of alcohol during pregnancy disseminated in digital media. Currently, the alcohol intake itself is a remarkable obstacle to be overcome in terms of public health. Such intake becomes even more critical during gestation period since it may cause serious problems to both the baby and the mother. The Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (SAF) is the most severe effect of the combination of alcohol and pregnancy. Even though it is treatable, FAS is not curable, having irreversible effects on the fetus which can only be mitigated by intervention. Considering that the consequences of alcohol use during pregnancy can and shall be prevented, it is essential that pregnant women, their family and friends as well as medical staff learn about the potential effects of such improper drinking. Being 100% preventable, the Fetal Alcohol Syndrome is nonetheless rather unknown by healthcare professionals and the population, as well. This syndrome consists of a characteristic set of signs and symptoms presented by unborn babies due to alcohol use by mothers along the pre-conceptional and gestational period. The most common symptoms are slow growth, facial features changes and neuropsychomotor development delay. FAS is currently considered the major cause of preventable intellectual disability in the world. Information may be the main instrument for SAF prevention and healthcare promotion. Once women are well-informed about the problems that may arise from alcohol intaking during pregnancy, affecting both the mother and the baby, they will realize the extreme risk they may be exposed to by consuming alcoholic beverage.
