É pau, é pedra: custo econômico dos desastres climáticos no estado do Rio de Janeiro

Abstract

This work aims to evaluate the economic losses caused by extreme weather events, more precisely floods (abrupt and gradual) and landslides caused by torrential rains in the state of Rio de Janeiro in the period 2000-2010. We used official data for the number of people affected, frequency and locations of these events, and then the information was crossed with average estimates of economic cost per person affected, homeless or displaced, calculated from the assessment of damages, floods and landslides in the mountainous region of Rio de Janeiro in January 2011 by the World Bank (2012). Based on these data, it was possible to estimate the damages with similar disasters occurred in the state of Rio de Janeiro, during the study period, between R$ 48.4 and 54.5 billion, somewhere around the average value of 1.3% of the State GDP in 2010.
