Samba, sambistas e sociedade: um ensaio etnomusicológico

Abstract

This book proposes some guidelines for a critical history of samba in the city of Rio de Janeiro in the early 1990s. Its definition of samba interrelates acoustic and kinetic practices named as such without excluding other aspects intrinsic to them (sociability, institutionality, etc. .), which are based on conceptions of time specific to certain aspects of social life in the city. The more specific focus of the text lies on the elaboration of songs and some particularities of the work of the instrumental ensemble of samba schools – the drums. With this, the author seeks to illustrate the relationship between both practices and their crucial significance for the mediation between the various areas of samba in Rio de Janeiro, as well as for equating social dilemmas of greater scope in the country.
