Método magnetotelúrico na bacia do Espírito Santo: desafios e possibilidades exploratórias

Abstract

The Espírito Santo basin is a prolific basin in the oil exploration's point of view. But there are seismic limitations due high impedances contrasts between Abrolhos volcanic rocks, sediments, and the salt walls in some regions of this basin. This work is focused on application of the magnetotelluric method in the Espírito Santo basin. In this work, the basin was geologically characterized and its evolution, stratigraphy and structure was described. Also, we present the fundaments of eletromagnetics methods used in oil exploration. Next, we described the theory of the magnetotelluric method, its basics concepts, acquisition and data processing. Was exemplified some publications about the magnetotelluric method in Brazil and in the world. This publications show the effectively and robustly of this method in exploration geophysics. In the end, was developed a case study in Costa (2005) mastering thesis. The results of this work were very interesting because some structural features of the continental portion of this basin could be confirmed.
