This dissertation investigates the image of the desert in Clarice Lispector’s The Passion
According to G.H. (1964), understanding it as the critical horizon of a disorienting visual
experience. Through Georges Didi-Huberman’s (2010, 2013, 2015) reflections on the image
and Walter Benjamin’s (2009, 2015) concepts of memory and archaeology, it formulates the
hypothesis according to which the work constitutes an archaeological novel, in which the
narrator’s gaze excavates the domestic space until revealing its aridity. Based on Gilles
Deleuze’s (2012) propositions on smooth space (espace lisse) and nomadism, this research
analyzes how G.H.’s deterritorialization transforms the former maid Janair's room into a desert
territory, marked by anachronic inscriptions and the failure of fixed categories of vision.
