Afinal, o que é a gentrificação? Uma análise conceitual e de suas possibilidades de verificação no cenário urbano brasileiro

Abstract

Particularly within the past few years, much has been spoken about gentrification in Brazil. The expression appears to have turned into commonplace among scholars dedicated to studying the urban phenomenon and, occasionally, is used without scientific accuracy referring to different occurrences. Such dissimilar occurrences, however, have only the departure of poor inhabitants from a specific area as a common factor between them, usually due to public policies aimed at developing or increment urban infrastructure. The excessive use of the expression, without a careful consideration regarding the concept it encompasses, apparently has hidden, in Brazil, the debates involving the theory of gentrification, its local peculiarities and the forms of resistance against it. This is exactly what this paper aims to discuss, as it seeks to problematize the issue of gentrification in the Brazilian urban scenario and its characteristics.
