Síndrome Poems: revisão bibliográfica

Abstract

POEMS syndrome is a manifestation of a hematological neoplasm, specifically plasmacytic, which presents with monoclonal gammopathy and chronic inflammation. As it is a rare condition that presents great morbidity, when the diagnosis is generally made, the patient already presents a great loss of quality of life and a worse prognosis. Therefore, the present study aims to review the main clinical manifestations of the disease and the diagnostic criteria. The PubMed database was used between the years 2022 and 2024, from which ten articles were extracted, including 7 case reports and 3 relevant bibliographic reviews on the topic. The keywords used for the search were POEMS syndrome and monoclonal gammopathy. By carrying out this bibliographical review, it was found that POEMS syndrome, like other monoclonal gammopathies, affects more middle-aged men, and there is a significant delay in the correct diagnosis, which constitutes a great disadvantage to the correct treatment and reduces the possibility of reversibility of symptoms.
