Resumo

This dissertation aims to demonstrate to the academic community and other interested institutions how a people with language, culture, and traditions have been preserving their knowledge through the ages, and how this resistance runs through paths and ways to deal with a capitalist society. It also aims to demonstrate how the Tikuna in the village of Campo Alegre in the state of Amazon, Brazil, use their mother tongue (L1) and the Portuguese language (L2) in communication, social life and expression in fields such as public policies, education, culture, health, and religion. It’s general goal is to understand the use of two languages in the village, one indigenous and the other alien – the Tikuna language and the Portuguese language, respectively - by examining how these lanages transit and modify the social environment, with its peculiarities and sociolinguistic, economic, cultural, and educational diversity. Its specific goals are: (i) to gain knowledge on the first linguistic contacts of the Tikuna society in the times of colonization by bibliographic means, and through field research in the present days; (ii) analyze the Tikuna language as an object of expression and identity, observing the challenges it faces in today’s society; (iii) check the possible changes which might have occurred in the use of the language in Campo Alegre; (iv) preliminarily identify transient linguistic phenomena in a so-called bilingual society, observing the history of linguistic contact and some functions of linguistic uses in the social life of the residents of the community. The findings of the research show that bi / multilingualism, in general, is not an aspect of colonial culture and practice, and needs to be developed based on a symmetrical relationship of power, in which the preservation of customs and languages must be valued by those interested in keeping their culture, their languages alive.
