This dissertation investigates the formation of literary neologisms in Portuguese and French in
light of Distributed Morphology (HALLE; MARANTZ, 1993), based on the hypothesis that such formations are not arbitrary deviations from the linguistic system, but result from the productive exploitation of regular morphosyntactic mechanisms. A non-lexicalist perspective is adopted, according to which syntax is the only generative component of grammar, responsible for both sentence formation and word construction. In this model, roots are acategorical and acquire grammatical status only when combined with categorizing morphemes. The problem of defining neologisms is discussed first, followed by how meaning emerges from structure, considering the role of the Encyclopedia in interpretation. The corpus analyzed consists of literary texts in Portuguese and French, selected for their creative exploration of language. Neologisms are classified into new morphological combinations, formations with unprecedented roots, and constructions situated at the boundary between lexicon and syntax. The results demonstrate that literary lexical creativity highlights the regular functioning of grammar and contributes to the understanding of the relationship between morphology, syntax, and meaning.
