Resumo
Introduction: Communication is defined as a process of dialogues, where share ideas, messages, emotions and feelings. In health care, through effective communication, it is possible to identify, recognize and resolve customer needs in a comprehensive and humanized way. As a strategy of communication, the spoken language is the best known, being the means of transmission of information most used by people today, but there are other factors that do not depend on auditory perception for this communication to be effective, highlighting the difficulties and barriers encountered in deaf communication in the face of disability auditory as it will not fit within the communication standards considered normal for human. Objective: to analyze the perception of nurses in relation to the assistance to deaf or hard of hearing patients. Methodology: this is a exploratory, descriptive research, with a qualitative approach, developed in the Rooming at the Maternity School of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (ME-UFRJ). The study participants were 12 nurses allocated in the sector of rooming-in who answered a questionnaire containing 17 questions. Results: 3 categories were found that were discussed throughout the article: 1- Nurses' knowledge about LIBRAS, 2-Communication and relationship with a deaf or hearing impaired patient and 3-Training of nurses by the institution in relation to assistance to deaf or hearing impaired patients. Conclusion: the training of health professionals to serve this part of the population would be extremely important to establish links with these patients and giving them the right constituted by the SUS to receive assistance in a universal, integral and mainly with equity, thus making assistance more humanized, safe and quality.
