Abstract

Objective: To analyze the functioning of the bereavement support program aimed at families who experienced the loss of their babies in the Surgical Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (UTINC), with emphasis on the emotional and psychological support strategies employed, in order to identify possibilities for improving the assistance provided. Methodology: This is a study with a mixed methodological approach, of descriptive and retrospective nature. Data collection took place in June 2025 through documentary analysis of psychological records and the minutes book of the Bereavement Care Unit (UTINC), covering the period from January 2023 to December 2024. Only cases with complete and legible records referring to families who lost their babies during hospitalization in this period were included. The quantitative analysis was conducted based on responses systematized in a structured form, followed by tabulation and organization of the data in Microsoft Excel software. The qualitative analysis was carried out using the Content Analysis technique proposed by Bardin, through thematic categorization of the emotional manifestations described in the records and psychological charts. Results: The main findings indicate the prevalence of feelings such as helplessness, frustration, real fear, and guilt among family members, as well as highlighting the relevance of qualified listening, family support, and post-discharge interventions in the elaboration of grief. Conclusion: Data analysis reveals that the psychological support offered through the institutional program plays a fundamental role in addressing parental suffering, being an essential strategy for the symbolic elaboration of loss and for the prevention of adverse psychological outcomes
