A vivência conjugal frente ao diagnóstico e tratamento da doença trofoblástica gestacional

Abstract

The diagnosis of Gestational Trophoblastic Disease (GTD) can result in psychological distress for the marital dyad, as the couple experiences the loss of expectation of a pregnancy and the possibility of a molar pregnancy, initially benign, evolving into cancer. The aim of this study was to analyze how couples experience the diagnosis of GTD and its treatment based on the investigation of the perceptions and feelings of each member of the conjugal dyad. This is a qualitative study composed of a sample of 5 couples, whose women were undergoing treatment at the Reference Center for GTD of the Maternity-School of UFRJ. It was observed that the experience facing the diagnosis and treatment of GTD is experienced by couples as a traumatic event, due to the particularities present in the marital dynamics in the face of this diagnosis. It is concluded that sensitizing the care team to provide support and establish good communication with the patient-couple is essential for coping with the disease.
