Resumo

Introduction: In intrauterine growth restriction (IRC), the fetus does not reach its growth potential. In most cases, developmental restriction results from placental insufficiency, which can originate from maternal or placental diseases. The CIR can also have fetal and environmental origin. Fetuses with CIR have high morbidity and mortality, as well as alterations in neurological, cardiovascular and cognitive development. the incidence of CIR is variable and affects 10% of term fetuses in developed countries and 20% in developing countries. the presence of an estimated fetal weight below the 10th percentile for gestational age raises the suspicion of CIR, allowing additional evaluations to be made in order to confirm the diagnosis. The identification of fetuses with CIR is essential to provide good perinatal outcomes. Objective: to describe the prevalence of fetuses with estimated fetal weight below the 10th percentile for gestational age that were evaluated in the obstetric ultrasonography sector of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro maternity hospital in October 2016. Method: observational, cross-sectional, retrospective study and analytical. All ultrasound and Doppler flowmetry reports stored in the Astriia@ Program database of the Maternity School at UFRJ in October 2016 were analyzed. After considering the exclusion criteria, all fetuses with estimated weight below the 10th percentile for gestational age and its prevalence were calculated. Results: 365 obstetric ultrasound examinations of 138 single pregnancies were performed. The prevalence of fetuses with estimated weight below the 10th percentile for gestational age during the study period was 7.6%. Conclusion: the prevalence of fetuses with estimated weight below the 10th percentile for gestational age in pregnancies evaluated with obstetric ultrasound at the Maternity School of UFRJ in October 2016 was 7.6%.
