Resumo

This research aimed to evaluate effects of fasting and food intake on the labor. Is consists of a bibliographic review of articles published in Portuguese, English and Spanish, from 2003 to 2013 and in Medline, LILACS, Bireme/PAHO and SciELO databases. Monographs, dissertations, theses and comments that were not available in full text and those whose content did not address the issue of feeding and fasting during labor were excluded. Eight articles were found. The studies found that feeding significantly increased the duration of labor. There was no significant difference in the incidence of vomiting, rate of medical interventions, adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes, incidence of dystocia, cesarean delivery rates and vaginal birth, in the control (fasting) and intervention groups. There was no overhead in maternal glycemia, there was good maternal anaerobic performance and greater effort of the body to compensate for the energy expended by the control group. The patients reported greater satisfaction when consumed fluids during labor than when they were fasting.
