Achados clínicos e desfechos neurológicos em pacientes com mielomeningocele submetidos à correção intrauterina ou à correção pós-natal acompanhados no Instituto de Puericultura e Pediatria Martagão Gesteira - Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro

Abstract

Objective: To describe, in an exploratory manner, the early clinical and neurological outcomes of children with myelomeningocele who underwent intrauterine or postnatal surgical repair and were followed at the Instituto de Puericultura e Pediatria Martagão Gesteira da Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (IPPMG-UFRJ), a tertiary pediatric referral center, summarizing key variables using descriptive measures and contextualizing the findings in relation to the literature, particularly the multicenter randomized Management of Myelomeningocele Study (MOMS) (ADZICK et al., 2011). Description: A four-case series of patients with myelomeningocele followed at the Instituto de Puericultura e Pediatria Martagão Gesteira da Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro. Using a retrospective review of clinical records, fetal, neonatal, and outpatient follow-up variables were collected. Continuous variables were summarized using mean, median, and standard deviation, and cases were described individually, presenting clinical and neonatal findings and discussing the results in light of the literature, including the MOMS study (ADZICK et al., 2011). Comments: The detailed description of these cases, together with a descriptive analysis of clinical and neurological variables and an exploratory discussion of the findings in relation to the available literature, illustrates the functional impact of myelomeningocele and the complexity of caring for children who undergo prenatal or postnatal surgical repair in a high complexity public healthcare setting. Systematizing these findings may contribute to improving care protocols and multidisciplinary follow-up for children with myelomeningocele in the national context.
