Abstract

This article reports the importance of the librarian in the service of reference in university libraries in the present day with the new possibilities of care facilitated by the use of the technologies. It addresses the reference service in Grogan's vision and the new names used for the same service offered today with the facilities provided by the use of these new technologies. Information literacy is essential for the librarian to perform his functions successfully and this is acquired in the interactions with the academic community and with the available technologies. This is the challenge for librarians to know and use tools that provide agility to the referral service process and "Saving the reader's time" according to Ranganathan's fourth law.
