Resumo

For environmental reasons, in areas destined to waste disposal, physical barriers are used to control gas and liquid flows. Differential settlement and dryness may lead to cracking in the soil that composes the liner, favoring the advance of the contaminant flow. Soils have low or almost no tensile strength. The use of reinforcements may avoid cracking, ensuring better mechanical characteristics of the composite material. This work presents an analysis of the hydraulic and mechanical behavior of a soil compacted and reinforced with recycled PET fibers. In order to evaluate the impact of cracking on the results, hydraulic conductivity tests were performed before and at different stages of diametral compression in samples with and without fibers. The results showed that the addition of the fibers made the composite material more ductile, enhancing the tensile strength, which minimizes the appearance of cracks, which may impart better sealing to the system of barriers.
