Introduction: The birth of a child is a long awaited moment. However, due to some critical clinical situations, the newborn (NB) needs immediate care at birth in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Care in the field of health should encompass welcoming, qualified listening and respect for the individual's desire (Carvalho and Besset, 2009, PNH, 2003). Occupational Therapy (OT) can intervene (De Carlo and Kudo, 2018) creating possibilities for parents to approach and gradually lose the fear of caring for their newborn in this new environment. Objective: To demonstrate the importance of Occupational Therapy in the care of newborns hospitalized in NICU Methodology: The present work presents as a method the revision of narrative literature with systematic search. Data were collected from September to October 2018, and Medline and PubMed were used as the database. Results: Twenty-one articles were selected, which fit the pre-determined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Conclusion: The present study demonstrated the importance of this professional throughout the process of NB experience in the NICU, however there is a shortage of research on the topic.
