O teatro do labirinto: análise semiótica do espaço poligonal da capela de N. S. da Glória do Outeiro, Rio de Janeiro

Abstract

On the basis of the working hypothesis that every architectural form is a semiotic significant and conveys a function, the formal and stylistic features of Nossa Senhora da Glória do Outeiro chapel in Rio d e Janeiro are read, or decoded. The religious function conveyed by this architectural sign i/Christian chapel/, is analysed from the standpoints of symbolic practice - primarily Platonic in content, with a major contribution from the mythical construct of the Virgin Mary - and soci al practice, closely linked to the baroque concept of the world as a stage. The interdisciplinary approach used, essential in a study of this nature, reveals the existence of numerous complex levels of meaning connoted by one and the sarne architectural form.
