André Rebouças e modernização: análise sobre as perspectivas de abastecimento de água e de higiene pública de um engenheiro negro abolicionista

Abstract

This article aims to highlight the urban interventions that took place during the second half of the 19th century through the figure of André Rebouças, an abolitionist engineer. We explore the perspectives of water supply and public hygiene in Rebouças, and the conflicts and disputes that arose for their defense. We used as documents André Rebouças' diaries in which he talks about the water supply in the city of Rio de Janeiro, and a public hygiene report signed by him, published in 1888, in Revista de Engenharia.
