Mudanças climáticas e exclusão ambiental no Brasil

Resumo

Inequality between rich and poor is usually addressed using indicators expressed in monetary units, mainly income or wealth. However, there are other dimensions of inequality that are not measured in this way, such as environmental externalities (pollution, risks of extreme events, commuting time and other environmental problems). Non-monetary poverty is a way of describing these losses, which are not expressed in monetary terms but which have a significant impact on quality of life, particularly for the most vulnerable social groups, which are also usually identified by conventional poverty indices. Climate change tends to exacerbate these losses through a double environmental exclusion: the benefits of emission-producing activities are concentrated among a wealthy few, while the damage caused by low capacity to adapt to extreme weather events is concentrated among the poorest classes.
