Resumo

This dissertation aims to investigate how green infrastructure can contribute to reducing disaster risk associated with rainfall and to advancing climate justice in territories facing socioclimatic vulnerability. It is grounded in the assumption that, although green infrastructure has been promoted as an ecosystem-based solution for climate adaptation, its development and implementation do not necessarily address the reduction of vulnerabilities, inequities, and social injustices that are intrinsic to climate justice—potentially leading to maladaptation. The research adopts collaborative design (co-design) as its methodological approach, drawing on emancipatory participatory methodologies from the Latin American fields of social technology and sustainable and healthy territories. It then develops a case study applying a collaborative urban green infrastructure design process within a community experiencing socio-climatic vulnerability: Vila de Itamambuca, in Ubatuba, São Paulo. One of the contributions of this dissertation is the incorporation of community-based adaptation into the development of green infrastructure for climate adaptation, concluding that a green infrastructure project oriented toward climate justice must be both ecosystem-based and community-based. The main results of the research include: the development of a methodological guide for collaborative green infrastructure projects aimed at climate justice and the reduction of rainfall-related disaster risk; an e-book presenting the collaborative green infrastructure design for Vila de Itamambuca; a participatory territorial assessment of the community, including a cartographic database with updated local-scale hydrography; the identification of socio-climatic vulnerability in Vila de Itamambuca; hydrodynamic modeling identifying flood-prone areas correlated with rainfall data; increased knowledge, awareness, and risk perception regarding rainfall-related disasters among residents; and the formation of a sociotechnical network engaged with green infrastructure practices.
