A igreja de S. Pedro dos Cléricos do Rio de Janeiro e suas congêneres: um estudo iconográfico do desenvolvimento do plano

Abstract

The objective in this essay is to attempt to establish a basic methodology for a symbolic reading of the western religious christian architectonic space. In other words, an "iconology manual" in which iconic fig' ures are substituted for architectonic forms. These will be arranged with the purpose to show the existence of a symbolic content common to all those that bear plastic and formal similarities. In i ts first part we will analyse the identity of the symbolism of the christian space with the preceding pagan correlative, from which it originates, Next, we describe the development of this space in the Middle Ages, Renaissance, until the Baroque of the XVIII century in Brazil, so that we can, finally present our method with a complete "iconological" analysis of the Church of St. Peter of the Clergy in Rio de Janeiro.
