Porto Maravilha e sua nova centralidade: as contribuições do mobiliário urbano e da arte pública para a ressignificação da área

Abstract

Since the 2016 Olympic Games, the port area of Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) has assumed the role of a new center in the urban dynamics of the city enhanced by the touristic use fostered by the urban requali cation project that the region has gone through. The objective of this article is to review the role that public art and urban furniture played in the transformations carried out in the public spaces covered by the Porto Maravilha Project. Literature review, review of o cial project documents and eld survey were used for this purpose. It was veri ed that the urban intervention was based on new pedestrians’ connections established between the refurbished public walkway, new architectural landmarks and new infrastructure network that, together, created physical and symbolic connections between individuals and the urban space promoting the (re)construction of the region’s identity and, therefore, its central attraction.
