Urca, patrimônio cultural, engenho e arte : um estudo sobre a alma dos sítios

Abstract

This research approaches the neighborhood of Urca as an example of the formation and historical representation of the city of Rio de Janeiro through ingenuity and art engaged in its configuration and development. In its integration with the city, Urca had two facilities as its main protagonists. One is the fort where the city was founded. And the other is the space of the Hotel Balneário, the Cassino and the Televisão as a decisive cultural facility for the coexistence and political, economic and artistic representation of the three moments described in this thesis, focusing on the role of this site in the course of the artistic and cultural Brazilian life. The thesis studies the performance of the facility in the period of 1922 to 1980, from its dimension of intangible heritage, through a look at the relational social engineering in the operation of the Hotel Balneário, Cassino da Urca and TV TUPI, which configured Urca as an icon of Carioca culture and the spirit of its time. The research had as its starting point an iconographic reading and adopted a documentary archival survey, associated with an interpretation that highlights the contextualized performance of some key characters on the threshold of modernity. The research reveals an entrepreneurial relational universe of significant situated protagonism. It was therefore possible to inaugurate new perspectives in the organization of Brazilian culture. The research indicates the importance of institutional innovation for situated development with the valorization of symbolic sites of belonging and citizenship.
