Abstract

I want the university to be a place that contributes to people's dreams. That it encourages potentialities and that it is built with dedication, a sparkle in the eyes and, above all, with joy! That it has relationships with more autonomy, freedom and respect. So that it is possible to build a society with more equality and social justice for all, and not just for a few. This book is for people who are open to denaturalize the academic quotidian and its relationships. Without idolatry. In this work I write scenes and stories to break silences about academic relations and related issues that many know and live, but very few seem to want to discuss openly. The goal of this work is to problematize and denaturalize academic relationships, using two concepts as tools for this adventure: academic pimping - as a soft seductive face - and moral harassment - as an explicit violent face. With autoethnography as a method, these concepts are used to analyze several academic scenes, probably fictional and verisimilar, and situations that take place in a parallel universe, very distant from what we live in Brazilian public universities. Any similarity with reality must be mere coincidence. We need to discuss more about what we produce and stimulate in academic relations, what we naturalize and accept, what goes on behind the scenes in universities. Only in this way can we eventually build different ways of living, working and relating to each other, in Academia and outside it. How is it possible to denaturalize what is set? To make it different? Do we want that? It is possible to build small changes and establish small breaks, interruptions, and breaches from our attitudes, including saying no to certain things, as well as proposing and building alternatives and different paths. As long as we want this and are willing to bear the consequences and responsibilities. Building new paths is not the kind of thing that happens. You have to make it happen, make the effort to make it happen. To build autonomous, innovative paths, different from the more traditional and naturalized ones, we have to deal with wounded vanities and, many times, become "academic lone wolves" or almost lonesome. We are the university! Institutions and organizations are made of people. The university is, like any other organization, an arena of disputes, contradictions, battles, joys, sorrows, dreams, disappointments, innovations, different values and interests being confronted all the time. How can we stimulate joy from our relationships in the Academy? What can we do differently to make the university a place of more joy, power, invention, equality, autonomy, where people have the will to build and pursue dreams? The challenges are there.
