Valorando a biodiversidade: importância da cadeia econômica da observação de aves nos municípios mato-grossenses da Reserva da Biosfera do Pantanal

Abstract

The aim of this work is to estimate the economic importance of birdwatching in the municipalities of the Pantanal Biosphere Reserve located in the state of Mato Grosso. To do this, a pioneering methodology is being developed that combines methods of economic valuation of public use in protected areas with the Wikiaves birdwatching database. The methodology proposed for estimating the current impact of birdwatchers is to calculate the number of observers from outside the municipality (or state) who recorded on a given date in a municipality of the RBP in Mato Grosso. We are also looking at the average cost these visitors spend on the activity, which usually requires hiring a local guide, as well as other services (accommodation, food and travel). By combining this figure with income and employment multipliers, the economic contribution of the activity in the region can be gauged, albeit preliminarily.
