Introduction: Lumbopelvic pain is common during pregnancy and can be worsened by factors
such as overweight, physical inactivity, and hormonal changes. Bariatric surgery, indicated for
weight loss in individuals with obesity, has proven effective in improving metabolic and
musculoskeletal conditions. However, few studies have examined lumbopelvic pain in pregnant
women who have undergone this procedure. Objective: To assess the impact of pregnancy related lumbopelvic pain in women previously submitted to bariatric surgery. Methods: This
was a cross-sectional study involving 22 pregnant women receiving care at the Maternity
School of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). Sociodemographic and clinical
questionnaires were applied, in addition to the Pelvic Girdle Questionnaire – Brazil (PGQ Brazil). Data analysis was performed using R and RStudio software. Results: Lumbopelvic
pain was present in 90.9% of the participants. Most were in the second or third trimester of
pregnancy, were classified as overweight or obese (90.9%), had inadequate gestational weight
gain (63.6%), and did not engage in regular physical activity (90.9%). Among those reporting
pain, 45% had low functional impairment and 55% moderate impairment. Half of the
participants became pregnant more than five years after the surgery. Conclusion: The study
demonstrated that lumbopelvic pain has a relevant functional impact on pregnant women who
previously underwent bariatric surgery, with most reporting mild to moderate limitations in
daily activities. Despite the benefits of surgery, key contributing factors persist and are
associated with the high prevalence of pain. Therefore, it is concluded that bariatric surgery
alone does not prevent lumbopelvic pain during pregnancy.
